What is a window well cover, and why do I need one?

Are window well covers required by building codes?

It depends on local building codes. Some areas require covers for egress windows to maintain public safety and emergency escape accessibility. Also, more insurance companies are requiring window well covers in order to secure coverage.

Will a window well cover stop water from entering my basement?

A properly fitted cover can help prevent water from pooling in the well. If your window well is flooding after installing a cover, check the gutters, downspouts, and the grading around your home.

Can I install a window well cover myself, or do I need a professional?

The covers available on WindowWellCovers.com are designed for a do it yourself installation. All that is needed to install these covers is a drill, a screwdriver and a pencil or marker. Instructions and all hardware you need is included.

How do I choose the right size cover for my window well?

Measure the well’s width and projection (how far the well extends from the house). To ensure a proper fit be sure to choose a cover that will be an inch or two larger than a metal well to ensure enough overlap so water will drain outside the window well. Concrete wells need an overlap 3” larger than inside dimensions all the way around to be sure of adequate weight support.

Do window well covers block natural light?

Our clear polycarbonate covers let in the most light of any cover available, while UV coating protects the covers from cracking and degrading in the sun.

Are window well covers strong enough to support weight (e.g., from people or pets)?

Our Sloped and Flat covers are designed to support 400 pounds of static weight, protecting people and pets from falling in. Bubbles are not flat enough to stand on, so they will support 150 pounds and help prevent them from falling into the window well.

No. Our egress window well covers are easy to open from the inside without tools or special knowledge to comply with fire safety regulations.
